Things remain very tense and quite messy between Shakira and her former longtime boyfriend Gerard Piqué following their split after 12 years as a couple.

“We regret to confirm that we are separating,” the pair wrote in a joint statement on June 4, 2022, shocking fans. “For the well-being of our children, who are our highest priority, we request respect for (our) privacy. Thank you for your understanding.” The former couple share two sons, Milan, born in 2013, and Sasha, who came along in 2015.

Shakira and Barcelona Football Club star Gerard met in 2010 when he took part in a music video she filmed for the World Cup. They officially came out as a couple in early 2011 but never wed.

“The idea of marriage scares me. I don’t want him to stop seeing me as his girl. It’s like that forbidden fruit, I prefer to keep him attentive and let him think that everything is possible depending on his behavior,” Shakira said on the “Planet Weird” podcast.

Unfortunately, Spanish media began reporting in spring 2022 that Gerard had allegedly been cheating on his longtime partner. It came just as she hinted at being terribly hurt in the lyrics to her song, “Te Felicito,” which was released in April 2022.

“To complete you I broke into pieces; I was warned, but I didn’t listen; I realized that yours is false … It was the drop that overflowed the glass; Don’t tell me you’re sorry, that sounds sincere, but I know you well and I know you’re lying,” Shakira sang two months prior to their split.

Following the breakup announcement, Gerard wasted no time in moving on. He passionately kissed his new girlfriend, Clara Chia Marti, at the Summerfest Cerdanya festival in Catalonia, Spain, on August 19, 2022. The following day, Gerard took Clara, who is 12 years his junior and works in public relations for his media production company Kosmos, to a friend’s wedding, where the pair were photographed lovingly holding hands.

Shakira in the meantime was caught by the paparazzi looking brokenhearted on August 21 after the photos emerged, as she went hiking with her sons outside Barcelona, Spain. She kept her children close, putting an arm around each of her boys and giving them assuring kisses.

The “She Wolf” hitmaker broke her silence regarding the split by saying it was the “most difficult” and “darkest hours” of her life in a September 2022 interview with Elle. 

“I can only say that I put everything I had into this relationship and my family,” Shakira confessed, adding that “everything is so raw and new” in the aftermath of their breakup.

The singer released pure emotions with her first song since the duo’s split when she dropped “Monotonia,” featuring Ozuna, and its accompanying music video on October 19. “It wasn’t your fault, nor was it mine; it was the monotony’s fault/ I never said anything, but it hurt/I knew this would happen,” she sang through tears in the video, seeming to hint at her split from Gerard.

“Suddenly you were no longer the same/You left me because of your narcissism/You forgot what we were one day/Hey hey hey,” the song continued, as she went on to sing the lyrics, “You, distant with your attitude, and that filled me with restlessness/You didn’t give even half, but I do know that I gave more than you.

Shakira once again used music to express her truth, releasing song “BZRP Music Sessions #53” in early January 2023 and taking aim at her ex. “I’m worth two of 22/ You traded a Ferrari for a Twingo/ You traded a Rolex for a Casio,” Shakira’s lyrics stated. “You’re going fast, slow down/ Lots of time at the gym, but your brain needs a little work too.” The song quickly went viral, and Gerard even responded publicly.

The retired soccer star made girlfriend Clara Instagram official in a January 25, 2023, post, as he cuddled up next to her in a romantic photo.

Shakira appeared to clap back two days later, posting a video showing her doing some sexy dance moves in a black crop top to her diss track “BZRP Music Sessions #53.” She wrote in the caption, “Las mujeres ya no lloran las mujeres bailan merengue!” which translates in English to, “Women no longer cry. Women dance merengue!”

Gerard announced his retirement from soccer after a nearly two-decade-long career.

“The last few weeks, months, lots of people have been talking about me. Until now, I haven’t said anything. But now, I want to be the one talking about me,” he said in a video via Instagram on November 3. “Now is the time to bring this journey to its end. I’ve always said that there would not be any other team after Barca. And that’s how it will be.”

Though the lyrics were poignant, Gerard didn’t hesitate to clap back. Using his football competition Kings League, Gerard is now working directly with Casio watches, with the company sponsoring the popular social media contest.

As aforementioned, Shakira compared luxury watch company Rolex to Casio – a more affordable brand – when dissing her ex. Clearly not shaken by the lyrics, Gerard stated in the sponsor deal aftermath, “This Casio is for life.”

Shakira seemingly hit out at Gerard’s girlfriend, Clara Chia, telling journalist Enrique Acevedo, “There is a place in hell reserved for women who don’t support other women.”
“I bought that story, that a woman needed a man to complete herself. I also had that dream of a family where the children had a mum and dad under the same roof,” the singer explained.
“I’ve always been emotionally quite dependent on men, I’ve fallen in love with love, and I think I’ve been able to understand that story from another perspective and today I am sufficient on my own,” she continued about life without Gerard.

Shakira opened up about her split during a March 2023 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The songstress called her collaboration with Bizarrap “a healthy way to channel” her emotions.

Shakira said farewell to her life in Barcelona, as she headed to a new life in Miami with her two sons she shares with Gerard. Sharing a photo of the city, she wrote in an April 2, Instagram post, “I settled in Barcelona to give my children a stability, the same we are now looking for in another corner of the world next to family, friends and the sea. Today we start a new chapter in the pursuit of their happiness.”
“Thank you to everyone who surfed alongside me so many waves there in Barcelona, the city where I learned that friendship is certainly longer than love. Thank you to everyone who has been there to cheer me up, dried my tears, inspired me and made me grow,” she continued.

Shakira seemingly addressed her messy split from Gerard during her acceptance speech at the May 2023 Billboard Latin Women in Music gala.

“This has been a year of seismic change in my life where I’ve felt more than ever and very personally what it is to be a woman, and what it means” she said on stage, per Billboard. “It’s been a year where I’ve realized we women are stronger than we think, braver than we believed, more independent than we were taught to be. Because what woman hasn’t at some time in her life forgotten herself because she’s seeking the attention and love of someone else? It happened to me, more than once.”

Shakira continued, “But there comes a time in the life of every woman where she no longer depends on someone else to love and accept herself just as she is. A time when the search for someone else is replaced by the search for oneself. A time when the desire to be perfect is replaced by the desire to be authentic, and where finding someone who is faithful is less important than being faithful to ourselves.”

During a September 21 interview with Billboard following her triumphant performance at the MTV Video Music Awards where she was honored with the Video Vanguard award, Shakira was asked if she was happy.

“It’s a very short question for a very long answer,” she revealed. “I don’t think everyone has access to happiness. It’s reserved for a very select number of people, and I can’t say I’m part of the club at this moment. There are moments of happiness, distraction, moments of reflection. There are also still moments of nostalgia, and my music right now feeds off that cocktail.”

“I think that nothing can compensate for the pain of destroying a family,” Shakira explained. “Of course, I have to keep going for my children’s sake; that’s my greatest motivation. But my biggest dream, more than collecting platinum albums and Grammys, was to raise my sons with their father. Overcome obstacles and grow old together. I know I’m not getting that now.”

On the day Shakira’s interview came out, she dropped the music video for “El Jefe” with the Mexican band Fuerza Régida. It featured a cameo by the former nanny to Sasha and Milan when they lived as a family in Spain.

The soccer star allegedly fired the woman after she reportedly told Shakira about his infidelity. When the former childcare worker appeared on screen, the Grammy winner sang the line, “This song is for you, since you weren’t paid severance,” as Gerard allegedly didn’t pay her upon termination.
