Robert Downey Jr. and George Miller will be there to support Chris Hemsworth when he receives his star on the Hollwyood Walk of Fame.
Chris Hemsworth sheds his Mighty Thor on-screen persona this summer and transforms into the diabolical Dr. Dementus to take on Anya Taylor-Joy’s titular hero in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. Hemsworth’s latest big-screen project made its world premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, so the actor has been busy in France promoting the new entry in the Mad Max franchise. However, Hemsworth will soon return to the United States because he is being honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. And his friends and creative colleagues, Robert Downey Jr. and Mad Max co-creator George Miller will both be in attendance.
The ceremony will take place on Thursday, May 23, at 11:30 a.m. PDT in front of Ovation Hollywood at 6819 Hollywood Boulevard. Hemsworth is being honored in the Motion Picture category, and his will be star No. 2,781. Fans can watch the event live as it will be streamed on walkoffame.com. Radio personality Ellen K, whose nationally syndicated morning program can be heard on KOST 103.5 FM, will serve as the master of ceremonies (emcee).
Miller along with Hemsworth’s Marvel Cinematic Universe brother-in-arms, Downey Jr., will be there to support the honoree, and they will also serve as guest speakers on Thursday. Plus, it might surprise fans to know that Downey Jr., even with such a wide-ranging career and an Academy Award, still hasn’t received his own star.
So, who has the most stars? Gene Autry holds the Guinness World Record for the most honors on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, with a total of five in the following categories: Recording, Motion Pictures, Television, Radio and Theatre.
Hemsworth’s ‘Remarkable Performances’ Will Be Honored
Most fans will naturally associate Chris Hemsworth with one of the MCU’s most powerful superheroes, Thor Odinson. However, over the course of his illustrious career, Hemsworth has played a number of memorable characters outside of Marvel, including Rush’s James Hunt, the father of James T. Kirk in Star Trek (2009) and Billy Lee in Bad Times at the El Royale. The Vice President of Media & Talent Relations for the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and the Producer of the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Ana Martinez, said of honoring Hemsworth’s “remarkable performances” in a statement (via walkoffame.com):
“The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce is proud to honor Chris Hemsworth with a well-deserved star. Chris is known for his remarkable performances that have captivated audiences worldwide. Along with his many fans, I am sure his fellow Australians will be so happy to know that we are adding another talented Aussie to our iconic Walk of Fame.”
Chris Hemsworth has serious comedic and dramatic chops, and he doesn’t always get the recognition he deserves out side of playing Thor.
Hemsworth’s Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony will take place the very morning early screenings for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga begin later that afternoon. To play the evil Dementus, Hemsworth turned to journaling as recommended by his director, George Miller. The role of Dr. Dementus is certainly a change from the heroic Mighty Thor, but Hemsworth said “there’s a similar passion” that went into Furiosa, which compared favorably to working in the MCU. Hemsworth said (per Deadline):
“There’s a similar passion. It’s like (what) Kevin Feige has to those films, a depth of knowledge and importance of it all, it feels very familiar. There’s nothing accidental on screen, it has a purpose or needs a purpose. To walk into a world that has a pre-existing franchise is an equal amount of excitement as well as fear.
I wanted there to be some humanity in him [Dementus], I didn’t want to see him as the villain. He’s a survivor. He’s doing his best to make it through the next 24 hours like anyone else is. He’s a product of The Wasteland. He’s trying to protect his tribe.”
Hemsworth’s Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony begins streaming at 11:30 a.m. PDT on Thursday, May 23. The next day, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and fellow MCU alum Chris Pratt’s The Garfield Movie battle it out for No. 1 at the box office over the Memorial Day weekend.
