Charlize Theron wanted to earn her way towards a fight while filming Mad Max: Fury Road!
Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron took the Mad Max franchise into a new and modern direction when they both starred in George Miller’s 2015 film, Mad Max: Fury Road. Portraying the roles of Max and Furiosa respectively, the film was as chaotic as it was brutal and Theron had to be prepared.
Being a toughened warrior, the character of Furiosa was as hard as it was impactful. With Theron portraying the role, the actress had to go beyond the normal and create a bulkier body just so that she could fight properly. Citing co-star Tom Hardy as one of the reasons, Charlize Theron revealed why she exercised so much for Mad Max: Fury Road!
Charlize Theron Got Mad During Mad Max: Fury Road
Starring alongside Tom Hardy in an adrenaline-rushing movie with tons of Guzzoline and spikes along the way, Theron and Hardy had a heck of a time filming Mad Max: Fury Road. The lead duo infamously also had their differences which somewhat interfered with the shooting of the movie and their own characters.
Charlize Theron, who portrayed the character of Furiosa in the film, had to bulk up her body quite strongly for the role of Furiosa. Stating that she was inspired by soldiers and wanted Furiosa to have that look, Theron gave it her all.
But it seems that things were not enough. As mentioned earlier Theron and Hardy were having on-set feuds, the Atomic Blonde actress revealed in an interview with Total Film (via Contact Music) that she had to become a girl with muscles to make the fight scenes look more believable!
I wanted to look like I had tremendous upper body strength because there was so much physicality in the movie – especially with someone like Tom Hardy. I just hate that idea of scrawny little girls fighting men off and then winning. I looked like a football player in this movie!
Well, Theron promised and Furiosa delivered as her on-screen character was quite formidable against Tom Hardy’s grunting Max. The character of Furiosa was so loved by the fans that director George Miller decided to release a spin-off on her character titled Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.
The spin-off stars Anya Taylor-Joy in the lead role as Furiosa and the film is on the verge of its release date. From on-set feuds to fighting in the film, the real-life chemistry between Hardy and Charlize Theron was quite troublesome. After the filming ended, both actors apologized or reasoned for their behavior!
Tom Hardy And Charlize Theron Could Have Worked Better!
The much-talked feud between Hardy and Theron could have potentially occurred because of the difference in their acting styles. With Tom Hardy replacing legendary actor Mel Gibson as the new Max and Hardy and Theron being under pressure, a lot of things happened while filming the 2015 movie.
In an interview with the NY Times, Charlize Theron revealed that she should have been a bit more empathetic while working with Hardy. Stating that she did not realize the immense responsibility that was on Hardy’s shoulders, here’s what Theron had to say about their on-set feuds.
In retrospect, I didn’t have enough empathy to really, truly understand what he must have felt like to step into Mel Gibson’s shoes. That is frightening! In a weird way, we were functioning like our characters: Everything was about survival.
On the other hand, Hardy also apologized from his side and stated that Theron wanted a more reliable and experienced partner which he couldn’t provide at the time.
I was in over my head in many ways. he pressure on both of us was overwhelming at times. What she needed was a better, perhaps more experienced, partner in me. That’s something that can’t be faked. I’d like to think that now that I’m older and uglier, I could rise to that occasion.
Although they had their differences, Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy put them aside and created the masterpiece of a film. With George Miller as the director, Mad Max: Fury Road received rave reviews and renewed interest from the people.
With spikes, Guzzoline, and, a barren wasteland, Mad Max: Fury Road received a rating of 8.1/10 on IMDB and a whopping 97% on Rotten Tomatoes! The 2015 film is available to stream on Max in the U.S.
