The WNBA intends to have Caitlin Clark on national television in nearly all of her regular season rookie games, as the league looks to ride the momentum from the massive viewing numbers she helped create in college.
With Clark set to be drafted into the WNBA next week – presumably by the Indiana Fever at No. 1 overall – the league announced that 36 of the Fever’s 40 games will be nationally televised.
The news comes after the women’s national championship outdrew the men’s final for the first time ever.
An average of 18.9million people watched Iowa‘s defeat to South Carolina, while only 14.8million watched UConn vs. Purdue.
Clark helped set several records for viewership in women’s college basketball at Iowa
The Indiana Fever do not have much mainstream star power, but that will change with Clark
Additionally, Iowa’s Final Four win over UConn – which drew a peak of 17million viewers – was ESPN’s most-watched basketball game ever, the network said.
According to a press release from the Fever, it will play two games on ABC, five on ESPN, one on ESPN 2, two on CBS, one on CBS Sports Network, eight on ION, four on Prime Video and 13 on NBA TV during the 2024 season.
Indiana landed the No. 1 pick after winning the draft lottery last December.
It will be the second straight year the Fever have the No 1 overall pick after selecting Aliyah Boston last April.
For the last several years, Indiana has been an afterthought in the WNBA, with the addition of Clark single-handily bucking that trend.
The Fever have not won a playoff game since 2015 and has the worst record, 18-58, in the WNBA last season.
