Eric del Castillo recently underwent a facet joint radiofrequency ablation, a procedure aimed at alleviating severe back pain. His doctor explained that the screws in his lower spine had loosened and fractured, causing significant discomfort. Yet, due to his age and a pre-existing cardiac arrhythmia, a major surgery was deemed too risky. Instead, doctors opted to cauterize the nerves causing his pain, offering temporary relief.

Despite the challenges, Eric displayed his enduring pride, walking upright and confident. “They made five small incisions,” he explained, referring to the minimally invasive treatment that provided some respite. This episode is the latest chapter in a long-standing health battle, which began in 2010 after a severe fall at his daughter Verónica’s house. “I took a hard fall, and I think that’s when two screws broke, causing me pain,” he recalled. Years later, his condition worsened, leading to the installation of a plate with eight screws to help him walk and work.

Eric’s struggles trace back to his youth, when the physical demands of his acting career—horse falls, action scenes, and stunts—took a toll. Decades later, those injuries have come back to haunt him. However, he refuses to let these difficulties dampen his spirit. Today, he cherishes the ability to walk, dance, and enjoy life, drawing inspiration from the countless characters he has portrayed. “When you interpret so many roles and study them, you gain a wealth of human science. That richness gives my life meaning,” he shared, reflecting on his career.

The results of the recent procedure could last anywhere from a month to a year, depending on how his body responds. Mornings can still bring pain, but Eric refuses to be defeated. His unwavering faith and energy remain strong, much to the joy of those around him. “He never loses hope, and that’s what matters most,” Ayala remarked, noting his enduring vigor.
