Wicked’s Cynthia Erivo has told how she was left “absolutely humiliated” after being asked to stand behind other actresses when she was singing.
The Hollywood star and singer opened up as she appeared on ITV’s Lorraine on Friday (November 21).
Cynthia was discussing her book Simply More with host Ranvir Singh, who said she was “blood-boilingly raging” for the actress over things that she had endured in her career.
The presenter noted how at drama school Cynthia was given small roles despite her talent. She went on: “And there was an extraordinary moment where they asked you to hide behind and to give your voice to two other lead actresses, who you say, I’ll let you decide what they looked like?”
“Yes,” said the star, who plays Elphaba in the Wicked movies. “Now I know, I have the choice.”
“You felt humiliated?” Ranvir asked, and Cynthia replied: “Absolutely humiliated, yeah. Deeply humiliated, because it was like using something I knew that was a gift for someone else in the wrong way.”

She went on: “And it just, yeah, it stays, it has stayed with me for this entire time. And it’s probably the one thing that makes me say no when I want to say no, and really use my voice the way I want to.”
The actress also shared what Wicked fans can expect from eagerly awaited new film Wicked: For Good, the follow-up to last year’s Wicked which saw her play Elphaba alongside pop star Ariana Grande as Glinda.
“You’re going to go on a journey with these two women,” she told the presenter, who revealed she was a huge Wicked fan.

“You are going to learn about what they’ve been through in the time you’ve been away from them.”
The actress said that both characters have “grown a lot” since the events of the first film.
“They have been through a lot,” she said. “They still love each other a lot, but they have to go through a lot of things to find their friendship again.”
